Here is another scene that we need help with. I digitally enhanced the restaurant's sign in the bottom photo. The restaurant was named SEA SHORE INN - FISH HOUSE. It appears to be on the Pacific Coast Highway. Anybody remember this restaurant and its location? Thanks!

We have solved yet another location mystery. Loyal viewer Don H. has identified this location as 17300 Pacific Coast Hwy
Pacific Palisades, CA 90272
Thank you Don H. for your assistance again...

BELOW: Some better quality images of the Sea Shore Inn Fish House as seen in another TV series: Ghost Story (TV 1972)- The Concrete Captain

This Blog's #1 Internet Search Question - What was the location(s) of Jim Rockford's beach front trailer and office?
Over 4,000,000 viewers have reached our blog by searching that question alone!
And thank you to over 10,000,000 viewers who have visited our Rockford Files filming location blog.

ABOVE PHOTO: In the first year of filming the ROCKFORD FILES the house trailer used by Jim Rockford was parked directly next to Malibu's Tonga Lei Restaurant & Lounge which was once located at 22878 Pacific Coast Hwy. Malibu, Calif. 90265 456-6444.  This location was actually right on Pacific Coast Highway unlike the later location which was well off Pacific Coast Highway.
Tonga Lei was a popular Malibu restaurant and motel right on PCH in scenic Malibu, and operated from the '60s probably into the '70s, when it became a Don the Beachcomber.

Later on Jim Rockford's house trailer was moved to the parking lot of what is now the Paradise Cove Beach Café located at 28128 Pacific Coast Highway. Although it has a Pacific Coast Highway address it is actually located down a ways from the highway and is situated right on the oceanfront. The road is called Paradise Cove Road, thus the address they used for this location in the TV series: 29 Cove Road Malibu, CA

The outdoor grill located on the beach where Jim Rockford had parked his trailer had several names during the run of the TV series. In this episode the grill was called CASA TACOS.

This episode featured many great actors/actresses.

Mini Bio (1)

Tom Scott was a predominantly a '70s African-American lead and supporting actor who appeared sporadically on television and in films beginning in the late 1960s. His first Hollywood appearance was as a student on "The Patty Duke Show" in 1964, He made appearances, mostly in guest spots on such popular TV shows as "Sanford and Son", "Marcus Welby, M.D.", and "Quincy M.E". His last Hollywood appearance was in a 1999 low-budget science-fiction thriller entitled "Age to Age".

Above Photo: Actor Greg Mullavey played the seedy con-artist Dirk Schaffer very well... You got to love that slick 1970's outfit he is sporting in this scene.
Above Photo: Veteran character actor Henry Slate played the crusty restaurant owner Oscar. Henry sadly passed away in 1996 at the age of 86.
Above Photo: Bill Mumy who became famous as young Will Robinson in the TV series "Lost in Space" played the painter/artist Trask. Along with his most impressive list of television/film credits, Bill is also a very talented well-known musician, songwriter, recording artist, as well as writer. He plays guitar, bass, keyboards, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, percussion and sings. He has released three solo CDs, 1997's "Dying To Be Heard", 1999's "In The Current" and the 2000 release of his third solo album, "Pandora's Box". All three released on Renaissance Records.

Oscar's Restaurant Update: I received the following information from Melissa Greene who played Aura Lee (As seen in the above photo) - She currently writes on FaceBook - Write From The Heart (Is her page)
Hello William - Oscar's was on the Pacific Coast Highway, on the right as you were heading north from the point where Sunset Blvd meets the Pacific Coast Highway. I'm not sure if that was the real name or not. The Seashore restaurant, shown in a few of your shots may very well have been right there at the end of Sunset Blvd., where it meets Pacific Coast Highway. If so, Oscar's was located across the street from a 50s style motel  - now gone, I'm sure - where the two highways intersected. That's where Robert Webber and I shot the montage of our  dinner and drinks preceding our "one night stand." The car accident scene was shot on a street on the Pepperdine College Campus in Malibu.

THANK YOU MELISSA GREENE FOR YOUR TIME AND EFFORT IN REPONSING TO OUR REQUESTED INFORMATION!

OK, enough with the actors/actresses in this episode. Here is what we need help identifying. It's a little grill called Oscar's in this episode. Not sure if that was the real name of the restaurant or not. It appears to be along the Pacific Coast Highway in 1975. The above two images show the building.
Anybody have any idea where this place is or was located?

Update 22 November 2018:  I was able to pinpoint the location of the café and the bank. The café where Rockford and Sandra Turkel (Sian Barbara Allen) met is currently located at: Hidden Havana Cuban Café 23548 Lyons Ave. Suite A Santa Clarita, CA 91321 It is within a shopping center at the corner of Lyons Ave. and Peachland Ave. in Santa Clarita. I don’t know what the name of the café was before it became Hidden Havana. The bank (which once had the distinctive sign) is currently Union Bank at 23620 Lyons Ave. in Santa Clarita. You can do Google satellite views set to 3D to zero in on this area. --Don H.

Need help in the two below photos:

ABOVE TWO IMAGES: The bank sign over the shoulder of Jim Rockford is the key to identifying this filming location. I believe the bank sign is for the Santa Clarita Bank in Santa Clarita, CA.
Anybody remember where this sign once stood? Please let us know by leaving it in the comment section.

ABOVE TWO IMAGES: The train depot use for this episode located in the cities of Ashbrook and Elmira, California - In this episode the Rockford Files used the same train depot for the two aforementioned cities. Thanks to Terry Guy, a viewer of this blog and pro photographer, we have learned that the train depot used was the  Santa Fe Railway station in Pasadena, CA.

ABOVE IMAGE: Train Station / Depot at Pasadena, CA - Terry Guy Wrote the following:

That picture was taken within the last two weeks of Amtrak service to that location.  The line from downtown Los Angeles out to Pasadena had been purchased by the Los Angeles County Transportation Agency for conversion into an electrified light rail line, and the Amtrak trains would switch to a more southerly routing into L.A. after January 14, 1994.

Trains on what is now known as the MTA Gold Line still stop here, but the station building has been converted into a restaurant and is hemmed in by multistory, mixed-use, retail/residential buildings.  Attached is a picture I took of it in 2010.

Update 08/18/2019: Brian's Rockford Files said...
The La Cita Bar in this episode was not on Hill street in downtown LA but at 401 S San Fernando Road in Burbank (There is a Hilton Garden Inn there now). The Savoy Hotel was at 344 South San Fernando Rd, and it too is long gone. I found these addresses in a old phone book from that era and Rockford's drive to the Savoy from La Cita clearly has the same Burbank hills in the background that you see today looking up Verdugo from San Fernando road.

Mini Bio (1)
Hawaiian-born James Shigeta was, for a time, the biggest East Asian U.S. star the country had known for decades. His up-and-down career reflected the country's changing interest in films with East Asian themes, but, when called upon, he filled both A-movie starring roles and minor T.V. guest appearances with the same cool and classy style. An aspiring song-and-dance man early in his career, he had a series of romantic leading roles in the late fifties, culminating in his most important one, the lead in Ross Hunter's glitzy production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, Flower Drum Song (1961). Supporting parts followed, his last showy turn coming again from Ross Hunter, with star billing and his own production number in the ill-fated musical remake of Lost Horizon (1973). Along the way, there have been many notable T.V. guest appearances showcasing Shigeta's facility with both sympathetic and villainous roles. His status as the foremost East Asian leading man of twentieth century U.S. film will endure undiminished by an erratic career.

Speaks fluent Japanese, French and Italian.
The first Asian-American to crack the old Hollywood studio star system, albeit briefly, groomed as a romantic leading man.
On April 18, 2005, he was awarded a Visionary Award from East West Players, the nation's premier Asian American theatre organization.

Upon his death, he was cremated and his ashes were scattered into the pacific ocean.
The Monday, September 1, 2014, issue of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported by Rob Shikina that services were held on Sunday, August 31, 2014, at Hosoi Garden Mortuary in Nuuanu and also reported that "Shigeta, a Marine during the Korean War, will be inurned in a private ceremony Tuesday at the National Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific at Punchbowl".

Personal Quotes (2)

I think an actor's life is necessarily self-involved. And that's what I would like to get away from.
I have never personally referred to myself as a star. When asked I always say, 'I'm an actor, a working actor.' I think the term 'star' is a vastly overused expression. That term has been used in reference to me but it is not of my own choice.

B-J's Complete Service Shop - Most likely the sign for this gas station was a prop and not the real name of the gas station.

The above three photos shows Jim Rockford stopping at a rural gas station and grocery mart. The address plate on the building reads 31918 and I believe that is the actual address for the building/business.

This episode had three main filming locations:
Palmdale, CA, Santa Clarita, CA and
Lake Los Angeles, CA.
So I would imagine this old time gas station was once located in one of these three locations.

We do not have a location for this old County Sheriff's Office. It may also be a building on the set of Universal Pictures Studios and not a real sheriff's office.

Actor James Hampton who played Aaron Ironwood in the ROCKFORD FILES episode The Aaron Ironwood School of Success dead at 84

Actor James Hampton, best known as bugler Hannibal Dobbs on "F Troop," Caretaker in the original "The Longest Yard" and the father in "Teen Wolf," has died at age 84, James also played Aaron Ironwood in the ROCKFORD FILES episode The Aaron Ironwood School of Success

The Hollywood Reporter, citing a family source, revealed that Hampton died at his home in Fort Worth, Texas due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Born in Oklahoma City in 1936, Hampton was mostly raised in Dallas until he attended the University of North Texas and was ultimately drafted into the U.S. Army. THR reports that he was in the cavalry at Fort Knox before being sent to active duty overseas. When he returned home, he studied acting with Sidney Lumet’s father, Baruch Lumet at the Knox Street Theater in Dallas.

Eventually, he moved to New York and found a job on the Oscar-nominated movie "The Cliff Dwellers." Due to its success, he went to Los Angeles where he landed a role on the TV show "Gunsmoke" in 1963. On the show, he met Burt Reynolds, which launched a friendship and working relationship that would endure until Reynolds’ death in 2018.

The New York Post notes that Hampton and Reynolds starred opposite each other in films like "Hustle,""W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings" and "The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing." Hampton also directed 16 episodes of Reynolds’ TV show "Evening Shade," which ran from 1990 until 1994.

Independent of Reynolds, Hampton studied with Leonard Nimoy, who helped him land the part of Pvt. Hannibal Dobbs on "F Troop," which only ran two seasons (65 episodes) but lived on in syndication.

Most recently, he published his autobiography in February titled "What? And Give Up Show Business?"

He is survived by his second wife, actress Mary Deese and children James, Andrea and Frank as well as grandchildren. The family has requested that donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Hampton played Fox’s father in the 1985 horror comedy "Teen Wolf."

Ned Beatty, an Oscar-nominated character actor whose many films include "Deliverance" and "Superman," has died at the age of 83.

"Ned passed away from natural causes Sunday morning, surrounded by his family and loved ones," Shelter Entertainment Group Talent Manager Deborah Miller told CNN in an email.
Beatty's first film role gained him lasting notice in the 1972 film "Deliverance" as one of four Georgia men who go on a harrowing canoe trip. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for 1976's "Network," played the bumbling Otis in 1978's "Superman," and had countless other theater, TV and movie roles.
He was once hailed by Daily Variety as the "busiest actor in Hollywood," according to his agency, Shelter Entertainment Group.
Beatty was born and raised in Kentucky, fishing and working on farms, according to the agency.
"He started as a professional performer at age ten when he earned pocket money singing in gospel quartets and a barber shop," the agency said.
After Beatty had long theater stints in Abington, Virginia; in Washington D.C.; and on Broadway, film director John Boorman selected him to play Bobby Trippe, who is sexually assaulted in the unflinching thriller "Deliverance," according to Shelter Entertainment.
Other films include "All the President's Men,""The Big Easy" and "Hear My Song," and more recently, "The Walker,""Charlie Wilson's War" and "Shooter," the agency listed. Ned also appeared in three episodes of the ROCKFORD FILES TV Series.

            From Our E-Mail:
            Hi,

Just wanted to let you know a few things that might help identify some of the locations.
I was the manager on duty the day they shot the "Dear Lick Falls" episode of the Rockford Files at the Chinese Theater in 1977/78.

I spent the morning with all of the actors and crew. I was talking to them all morning about all kinds of things.

The Chinese Theater forecourt was just that.

The apartment building on Orange was shot the same day just steps away from the Theater.

The west side of the Chinese Theater doubled as the stage door entrance to the Palisades Playhouse.
I remember they were hanging clothes on the rail and had dressed inside the theater on the other side of the exit door with some clothes racks in case the camera picked up anything inside.

So the Chinese Theater front, forecourt, west side and the apartment building on the other side of Orange were all done the same day.

I found out later that James Garner wanted to save money and not have to do too many location moves in one day. This is probably the period he got upset at Universal and bought his own production trucks and moved really quick.

As I remember they got there around 7 and were gone by around 1.

Also: RE: The Rockford Files - EPISODE: White on White and Nearly Perfect (1978)  In another section you mention a strip club on Sunset. They may have used the exterior front of the club on sunset but that red "cat" cage was behind the Pink Pussycat strip club at 7969 Santa Monica Blvd for years looking just like that. The car exiting the parking lot picture looks like it's leaving the lot on the east side of the Pussy Cat property because the USA gas station (now a 76 station) is on the other side of Santa Monica.

            Hope that helps a bit.
            Regards,
Ron H         (Thank You Ron H!!!!!)

The Rockford Files is an American detective drama television series starring James Garner that aired on the NBC network between September 13, 1974, and January 10, 1980, and has remained in syndication to the present day. Garner portrays Los Angeles–based private investigator Jim Rockford, with Noah Beery Jr. in the supporting role of his father, Joseph Rockford, a retired truck driver nicknamed "Rocky". The show was created by Roy Huggins and Stephen J. Cannell. Huggins created the television show Maverick (1957–1962), which starred Garner, and he wanted to recapture that magic in a "modern day" detective setting. In 2002, The Rockford Files was ranked No. 39 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. In contrast to most television private eyes, Rockford wears low-budget "off the rack" casual clothing and does his best to avoid physical altercations (although he is more than able to hold his own in a fistfight). He rarely carries his Colt Detective Special revolver, for which he has no permit, and prefers to talk his way out of trouble. He works on cold cases, missing persons investigations, and low-budget insurance scams, and repeatedly states that he does not handle "open cases" to avoid trouble with the police. (This self-imposed rule of Rockford's was relaxed in later seasons.) He has been a P.I. since 1968, and his usual fee is $200 per day plus expenses($200 at the series' beginning in September 1974 was the inflation-adjusted equivalent of $986 by March 2018). The show went into hiatus late in 1979 when Garner was told by his doctors to take time off because of numerous knee injuries and back trouble, as well as an ulcer. He sustained the former conditions largely because of his insistence on performing most of his own stunts, especially those involving fist fights or car chases. Because of his physical pain, Garner eventually opted not to continue with the show some months later, and NBC cancelled the program in mid-season. It was alleged that Rockford had become very expensive to produce, mainly due to the location filming and use of high-end actors as guest stars. According to sources, NBC and Universal claimed the show was generating a deficit of several million dollars, a staggering amount for a nighttime show at the time, although Garner and his production team Cherokee Productions claimed the show turned a profit. Garner told a story to Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show that the studio once paid a carpenter $700 to build a shipping crate for a shoot-out on a boat dock, though there were shipping crates on the dock. The script often called for Garner to damage his car, so the car could be sold, repaired, and repurchased for each episode. Do you think you know a lot about TV? Try our quiz and enter to win $500!
